A Letter To You

We hope this letter finds you in good spirits and health. We are Josh and Tracy Smith, the founders of the Fourth Purpose Foundation. Our journey to this point has been unique and deeply personal, especially for Josh, who, in his early 20s, spent five years in federal prison. This experience, though challenging, was transformative, leading us to where we are today.

Prison was a turning point for Josh. It was there that he was introduced to a new world of possibilities through books, education, and the life experiences of fellow inmates. More importantly, it was where he found a renewed faith and hope, which became the bedrock of our mission at the Fourth Purpose Foundation.

After his release, the road to reintegration was fraught with challenges. We faced the harsh realities of societal re-entry, from the struggle to find employment to being displaced from our home. However, these hardships only strengthened our resolve. Josh’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a successful business, which became the financial backbone for launching our Foundation.

Our mission at the Fourth Purpose Foundation is simple yet profound: making prisons a place of transformation. We believe that every individual, regardless of their past, has the potential for transformation and deserves a chance at redemption and a meaningful future.

Josh’s work has been recognized and utilized in various capacities, including his appointment to Tennessee’s Criminal Justice Reinvestment Task Force and as the Director of Governor Lee’s Volunteer Mentorship Initiative. These roles have allowed us to advocate for a justice system focused on reducing recidivism and promoting public safety through rehabilitation and community support.
